Visit Negombo: The Dutch captured the town from the Portuguese in 1640, lost it, and then captured it again in 1644. The British then took it from the Dutch in 1796. Negombo was one of the most important sources of cinnamon during the Dutch era, and there are still reminders of the European days. The busy centre of Negombo town lies to the west of the bus and train stations.
Beach – Negombo’s beach, which stretches north from the town right along the hotel strip before fading into a palm tree distance in front of the big hotels is extremely pleasant. Although the sea can be rough during the monsoon, you can swim in the sea most of the year.
Fish Market – Fishermen take their uniquely designed canoes and go out to sea to fish around the cost of Negombo. It’s a beautiful sight as they return home into the lagoon after a fishing trip. There is a fish auctions by the beach and they sell their freshly cought fish at a market near the Negombo Fort.
Religious Building – Negombo is dotted with churches so many locals converted to Catholicism that the town is known as Little Rome. The fading pink chamber of St Marys Church, in the town centre.
